I went to Samrong, a small village in northern Cambodia, for volunteering teaching trip in the summer of 2016. During one week of teaching and volunteering, I finally truly realize how lucky I am through all the contrasts I have seen and felt. This experience encouraged my servant heart to even help more people in the future and reinforced my dedication on working up to my potentials base on all the superiorities I possess. On the first day, due to my young age, I was assigned to teach the lower kindergarten kids. As I stepped in the classroom, I met my interpreter Sreypov, a Cambodian girl who is only two years older than me. We quickly became good friends because we have so many common topics to chat about as teenager girls. We both watch Youtube make up videos, post pictures with the same filters, hold the same view on relationships struggles, and I just feel like she is not different at all comparing to all my other friends. However, I was born in a city that never sleeps while she was born in the silent village of the most undeveloped country in the world; I buy a luxury bag without struggles while she has to work instead of going to college since she can’t afford the tuition that is not even one percent of my annual tuition. If I’m asked to name more contrasts, I could list a plenty. Sreypov told me she’s jealous of my life when she was looking through my album. Looking at the kids who are all born in the poverty, I started to sigh and hoped that education could bring them courage and confidence to challenge their destined lives. Sreypov and I are the same at some degree, but we are separated so far away from each other by destinies. This strong feeling made me feel sad but thankful at the same time since I possess the chances that so many people dream of. Thus, I decided to push myself harder to work up to all my potentials with my superiorities and continue serving those who are in need with a loving heart and bringing them good news to see the world differently.
